Experience the history and heritage of Northumberland and Hadrian’s Wall.

 

Join us as we visit the historic sites of the Northumberland and the North of England. This includes the legendary Roman built Hadrian’s Wall, as well as Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle, Alnwick Castle, The Alnwick Garden and the National Trust’s Wallington, Hexham Abbey, Chesters Roman Fort and Roman Vindolanda.

DAY ONE – Arrival

We depart from your home and travel north to Northumberland where we arrive with time to relax before dinner this evening.

 

DAY TWO – Lindisfarne & Bamburgh Castle

This morning we take a scenic journey along the Northumberland coast to cross the tidal causeway to visit Lindisfarne, or Holy Island. The island is home to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, a unique castle with a Gertrude Jekyll garden and a colony of grey seals. We then travel to the imposing Bamburgh Castle, the one-time seat of the Kings of Northumbria.

 

DAY THREE – Wallington & Alnwick Castle

Today we visit Wallington, one of the National Trust’s more unusual properties, famous for the huge pre-Raphaelite paintings that tell the history of Northumberland, with a collection of beautiful furniture and quirky curiosities, and there’s a beautiful walled garden. Explore the world-famous Alnwick Castle (Harry Potter, Downton Abbey) and its famous neighbour, The Alnwick Garden.

 

DAY FOUR – Chesters Roman Fort & Hexham Abbey

Today we follow part of the route of Hadrian’s Wall, with an opportunity to see a section of the actual remaining structure. We visit Chesters Roman Fort to gain an insight into the life of a soldier living on Rome’s northern frontier. At Roman Vindolanda there’s a world-famous collection of artefacts. Our journey takes us through the Roman town of Corbridge, and a stop at Hexham Abbey.

 

DAY FIVE – Departure

After breakfast this morning we leave our hotel and make our journey home with comfort stops en route.
